September is Emergency Preparedness Month

September is recognized as emergency preparedness month. This is the month that is set aside for you to check your emergency supplies; review your emergency preparedness plan; and to update your special contact numbers to be used in an emergency.

If you do not have the above emergency items, this would be a great time to get started with making your family better prepared to deal with an emergency. Listed in a different place on this page is a link to a Ready In Three publication that will guide you step by step in making a plan, gathering your supplies, and, instructing you in making an emergency contact list to complete your plan. We also have a link to the "Preparedness Calendar". It is a method to acquire your supplies over a period of time without breaking the bank. It is a great tool!

We would be glad to assist you in that process if you wish. Additionally, we would be happy to give an emergency preparedness program to your club or organization. Just contact Rod at Lafayette County Health Department. My number is 660-259-4371, ext. 225.

All of us need to have a plan on what we, as a family, will do if one of these disasters strikes our community. All communities have fire departments, rescue squads, law enforcement, and other first responder groups, but they can only do so much. The ratio of residents to emergency response personnel is really lopsided. Help will get to you, but it may not be as soon as you would like or need.

Help all of the first responders to help you. Get prepared to day. Follow the instructions in the Ready In Three publication. Make a plan...take a first aid class and learn CPR. Take those steps to better prepare YOUR family when disaster strikes.

When a disaster hits, it is too late to prepare!
