Tar Wars

Tar Wars

Fifth grade students in Lafayette County were presented with Tar Wars, a youth tobacco prevention program. The program, developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, was presented by Lafayette County Health Department. Education on cost, marketing, chemicals, and ways to say no to tobacco are given to participating schools. Students take part in simulating toxins being exhaled (by popping balloons) such as tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine. This exercise gives the students information on toxins in tobacco products and increased risks for COPD or emphysema, both smoking related illnesses.
