Combatting Tobacco Use

Tar Wars

Teaching students the damaging effects of tobacco.

Education Supports Prevention

Tobacco use causes cancer and other preventable diseases in youths and adults.

When students are armed with information, they are poised to avoid the harmful ramifications of tobacco use. Tar Wars aims to help children avoid tobacco use.

Teaching Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Tar Wars

Fifth-grade students in Lafayette County participate in Tar Wars, a youth tobacco prevention program. The program, developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, offers students at participating schools information about tobacco cost, marketing, chemicals, and strategies to combat peer pressure. Students take part in simulating inhaled toxins such as tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine. This exercise gives the students information about toxins in tobacco products that lead to increased risks for emphysema and other smoking-related illnesses.
